I have spent over 50 years refining my trade to become a highly considered expert in upholstery. I left school back in 1963 and started my very first apprenticeship in upholstery for a prestigious local company; Greenland’s of Hereford. I got stuck into the apprenticeship and learnt all areas of the trade including the lining of coffins and mattress making! Five years on and I had successfully completed my apprenticeship and gained a wealth of experience in the process. I went on to set-up a successful business with my friend and colleague Jeff Wilks and we became known as Wilks & Weaver. The business went from strength to strength and we carved a niche in the market by creating the country’s first baby mattress to protect against cot death syndrome. This new mattress design really made a stir in the industry with happy customers from near and far singing the praises of the product including famous footballer and TV presenter; Gary Lineker. After 28 happy years running Wilks & Weaver we decided to part ways and pursue solo projects. It was then that, in 1997, Mel Weaver Upholstery was born which I have ran ever since with my lovely wife Cherry. Our family run business has been serving both the local and national community ever since from our wonderful home, Blackbarn Farm, Hereford.
I left school in 1963 and worked as a hairdresser in Hereford, whilst studying at night school reading secretarial skills and short-hand. I then left my hairdressing career to have a family and became a proud mum to three children. After my children had grown and were off to school I went back into the world of work; hairdresser by day and typist by night, multi-tasking was my middle name. It was during this time that I went back to school and really honed my administrative skills and went back to college to gain a qualification in business administration and computer skills. Soon I began to work my way up the career ladder and was a highly successful PA to the Managing Director of a leading insurance company. It was these newly acquired skills that really allowed me to help launch Mel Weaver Upholsterers with my wonderful husband Mel in 1997 and it’s safe to say we haven’t looked back since.
